European Tariff

In October 2019, the World Trade Organization (WTO) authorized a 25% tariff to be applied to $7.5 billion worth of various goods imported into the United States from Europe. The tariff was related to a longstanding trade dispute between U.S. airplane manufacturer, Boeing, and French airplane manufacturer, Airbus. The U.S. alleged that the E.U. provided unfair subsidies to Airbus and the WTO agreed, which authorized the U.S. to move forward with the retaliatory tariffs. These tariffs applied to a variety of imports from the E.U., including Spanish Olive Oil, Spanish Olives, Italian Amarena Cherries, Spanish Pears, and Danish Mussels.

Update: As of September 1, 2020, an additional 25% tariff has been applied to Spanish Green Olives. This tariff also applies to Greek Olives, which were previously exempt.

France & Italy
Crops affected – Arborio Rice

In early October, a storm called “Alex” brought fierce winds and heavy flooding to south-eastern France and north-western Italy, causing serious damage to roads, bridges, homes, and agriculture. In north-western Italy, flooding was described as “historic”, with over 24 inches of rain falling in only 24 hours. [1] The country’s “golden triangle”, a marshy area where a significant amount of Italy’s rice is grown, was also severely affected when the Sesia river overflowed its banks and engulfed the territory. [2]

Like many agricultural items, rice is grown in specific regions and is susceptible to environmental changes in those areas. Roland Foods makes every effort to secure a steady supply of our items, while maintaining the highest quality in the marketplace.

Our thoughts and sympathies are with our suppliers in France and Italy, their families, and to everyone who has encountered suffering and loss during this difficult time.

Italy, France & Spain
Crops affected – Balsamic Vinegar

The grape harvest has been exceptionally fruitful in 2020 throughout Italy, France, and Spain. France and Spain are predicted to reach 1.14 and 1.13 billion gallons, growing by +3% (France) and +13% (Spain). The world’s leading wine producer, Italy, should reach 1.2 billion gallons, a decrease of only 1% compared to 2019.

The climate in Italy has been positive in the last 12 months with sufficient rainfall in November and December 2019. During that time, water reserves were able to be restored and the following months continued without further issue. [3]
